Hi: Perhaps this may provide some inshigt-I have RA and tolerated a degenerative right ankle for over 2 years. As the pain became severe, I decided on ankle fusion with a top surgeon in Boston. After a lot of research and internet searching, I agreed to ankle fusion in December 2007. The recovery is long, though not painful compared to pre op pain from RA. Unfortunately I fell down a flight of stairs while 10 days weight bearing(with crutches)This resulted in my breaking my OTHER ankle so I was actually what they call a bi lateral patient. My fused ankle union stayed fixed but the fall impacted my right heel (calcanus) so I had to deal with swelling and a new set schedule for recovery. In May 2008, my surgeon told me I was OK to go This meant I was able to get around with TWO walking boots and a full regime of PT. I went 3 times per week until August 2008.PT stretched and manipulated the muscles in my right underfoot and began to help me get ambulatory with any aids. Remember the right ankle and right leg muscles were not used since December 2007.It’s been a long haul- I now work out 5 times per week spending time on a bike, some treadmill and the eliptical machine. I also liftweights and generally try to get fitter after a long recuperation period. There’s some discompfort on my fused ankle particulalry on the right edge of my foot- not sure if it is muscles? I am dealing with some pronation and some supination and I have a slight limp at this time. Shoes are a problem I seem to need a sole that is built up I purchased Merril shoes and orthoheel inserts. ushioning in the shoe helps a great deal. I tried on MBT shoes but they did not help my gait. I am seeing my surgeon next week for a check up, also to see if I need specialized orthotics. I am happy to answer any ankle fusion questions just drop me a line, and anyone with thought as to their recovery, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts as well.
